I have never played Terra Mistica, we went straight to Gaia project. There are two unique territory spaces in Gaia Project that are different than Terra Mystica. I thought the same thing vs the Anachrony AI for solo, but after playing a few times realized that it's build order was actually the optimal strategy in most scenarios. The new research track (replacing the cult track) is a great idea and gives opportunities for even more strategic decisions, making Gaia Project feel heavier and more complex, but still not more complicated than TM.
