A day walk that takes in Cradle Mountain can be found at the northern end of the majestic Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Take the B12 road to Mole Creek and then the C136 Cethana Road to join the C132 Cradle Mountain Road to Cradle Valley. Day Walks: Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair The jagged peaks, highland moors, stunning lakes, waterfalls and rainforest of central Tasmania are all testament to the sheer power of ice. The walk can be divided into three sections - The Visitor Centre to Snake Hill (1 hour), Snake Hill to Ronny Creek (45 minutes), and Ronny Creek to Dove Lake via Lake Lilla (1 hour). About 10,000 years ago the whole central plateau was covered by a 6km thick ice sheet which grinded, scraped, gauged and smoothed the 1000 million-year-old rock beneath. Along with the Enchanted Walk, it’s also listed among Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks. The itinerary maximises opportunities for optional side trips including Mt Ossa – Tasmania’s highest peak (weather permitting), Lake Will and a number of lookouts and waterfalls. As far as Cradle Mountain walks go, the Dove Lake Circuit is considered the thing to do. With stunning scenery, abundant wildlife & unique environments, Cradle Mountain walks suit day-trips and multi-day walking adventures. Other Cradle Mountain walks: As our weather was really inconsistent, we only completed the Enchanted and Dove Lake Circuit walks (two of the best Cradle Mountain walks).
