The Siege of Syracuse.

When a new idea pops into one’s head it’s good to do a quick feasibility estimate. The Archimedes claw was a device used to demonstrate the power of leverage.

Archimedes died c. 212 BC during the Second Punic War, when Roman forces under General Marcus Claudius Marcellus captured the city of Syracuse after a two-year-long siege.According to the popular account given by Plutarch, Archimedes was contemplating a mathematical diagram when the city was captured. The MythBusters already did their (failed) attempt at an Archimedes Death Ray, so this episode was framed as a contest for other people to make their own attempts. This contention was dealt with in 1973, when a Greek engineer undertook his own experiment to get to the bottom of Archimedes' death ray. Archimedes' Claw.

Episode 46: Archimedes Death Ray Revisited.

Archimedes Death Ray: busted .

He assembled 70 soldiers, each holding a 5-feet by 3-feet (1.5-m by 0.9-m) mirror. Archimedes used steam cannons rather than burning mirrors to set fire to Roman ships at the siege of Syracuse, a study suggests. This article is also an investigation of a myth that would be tackled some 130 years later by the MythBusters! NOTE: all thumbnail images from MIT 2.009 page.

All in all, the MythBusters concluded that the Archimedes Death Ray was too complicated and impractical to be a viable weapon for its time. Weapons Invented by Archimedes ... Marcellus also used a variety of weapons able to hurl or shoot projectiles at attackers both at great range and directly under the city's walls. Legend has it that the mathematician Archimedes invented a giant mirror that used the sun to set Roman warships afire during battle in 212 B.C. It's an interesting task for a pastor and a person of faith--debunking myths while mythdefying or mythdenying our critics who say that Christianity is riddled with the incredulous. They were successful in getting a mocked up ship made out of red oak to start burning after ten minutes of exposure to direct sun. The Internet chatter about this is impressive, especially after the NPR program on the subject.

The concentrated beam reflected by the mirrors set a row boat 160 feet (49 m) offshore aflame.
Apparently the 1870s-1880s were a good era for ‘busting! The course instructor’s quick “back of the envelope” calculation (done while pondering the MythBuster result) indicated that it could be possible (assuming that the wood is not reflective)..

In 2009, as an exercise in design, a class at MIT decided to try and reproduce the Archimedes weapon using 127 one foot by one foot mirrors. The MythBusters already did their (failed) attempt at an Archimedes Death Ray, so this episode was framed as a contest for other people to make their own attempts. One contest was a "short range" contest to create a mirror that worked at 5 ft and the other was a 100 ft contest. About the same time, however, and in an earlier volume of the Proceedings, I found an article with the title, “On the burning mirrors of Archimedes, and on the Concentration of light produced by reflectors,” by John Scott.

In 215 BCE, the Roman navy and army attacked Syracuse and, to help the hard-pressed city folk, Archimedes designed a number of war machines to fight back. The Mythbusters considered the myth busted because the weapon is impractical, though that doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible — and neither conclusion excludes the possibility that Archimedes tried it at Syracuse! A Roman soldier commanded him to come and meet General Marcellus but he declined, … Mythbusters may only have succeeded in perpetuating a myth--that Archimedes' mirror trick is a myth. But many have wondered whether the story is a myth.

The MythBusters revisit the myth in which an array of mirrors can be used to set a wooden ship on fire (Archimedes Death Ray).

Some of these titanic machines seem to have been stone throwers or large crossbows, but the … Emphasis mine. Their experience, however, showed some flaws with the idea of using this as a weapon.

It is possible, then, that Archimedes' death ray could have worked.
